Thank you for visiting my page. My work is inspired by the opportunities I have had to live and and work in different cultures.
I only truly began to take fiction writing seriously when I retired to Shepherdstown, West Virginia, one of those quintessentially creative places which inspire writers. I am now blessed with friends, mentors, and critics of all kinds which I find simultaneously educational, humbling, and fulfilling.
This quote in the Candorville comic strip by Darrin Bel speaks to my own view that our universe is full of the unexpected and unknown and it is the writer’s mission to expose us to as many of these as possible.
I’ve figured it out. God is a writer. It’s the only thing that makes sense.
And here is a quote from one of my characters in my recently published novella
Bougainvillea that tells you a lot about me.
Humans, by nature, need more energy than they create. Other animals are not as needy, and plants give more than they take. Thus, it is only through the unselfish deeds of other life forms that human life can continue.
John Deupree
A lone traveler, Joseph, comes upon a cottage in a place with no sounds and no wind. Invited to join the three siblings who dwell there, he is asked each night to share a story. As the stories unfold, the siblings help him accept their meaning, allowing him to continue onwards to the place where footprints lead backwards into the sea.
Bougainvillea explores our acceptance of other dimensions and planes of existence. At once a literary, mystical, and metaphorical journey, the novella delves into mysterious realms and takes the reader into uncharted territory.

A fascinating novella on spirituality from which we can all benefit. It is fast paced but with nearly each page comes another growth opportunity. He brings in music, mythology, history, dance and a deep understanding of nature, weaving them together seamlessly to tell the story. The ending was a surprise but the clues were there.

Reading this was like sitting on a leaf riding the current of a stream as it exited a canyon with more and more of the wider world visible with every twist and turn.
